Residents report more than 35 homes contaminated and/or condemned in the Paradise Point/Runaway Bay area. There will be $Billion consequences.
The failure of 91 Sewage Pump Stations across the city last week, releasing tonnes of raw sewage into storm water, creeks, parks and playgrounds is having a serious impact on residents and their health.
One affected resident/ratepayer whose home was inundated advised that more than 35 homes have been contaminated and/or condemned for Class 3 Black Water (Sewage) Contamination. Council told the resident that they are only responsible for providing short-term temporary accommodation.
Residents are distressed and may well have lost their homes. Professionals state that homes with this level of contamination can rarely be restored to a healthy state.
The resident also said that a number of the older, retired residents in the street discovered that they weren’t insured for this level of contamination.
Cr. Cameron Caldwell mocked residents, denying that the muck seen flowing down the gutters after the event was sewage. He claimed that tests showed it was ‘Ground Water’. No test results have been released.
Council’s CEO, the Mayor, Councillors Owen-Jones (Div 2) and Caldwell (Div 3), all desperately denied the system failure at Tuesday’s Council meeting.
Other suburbs reporting impacts include Yatala, Helesvale, Helensvale Shopping Centre Tunnel (One of the worst sources for years-Refer Analysis), Arundel, Paradise Point, Hollywell, Coombabah, Runaway Bay, Runaway Bay (Grand Canal), Carrara, Merrimac, Clear Island Waters, Robina and Burleigh.

That’s horrible. So sorry for everyone affected. Class action seems like the only way to hold them accountable. Bloody insurance companies. You read all the fine print but then when something happens, like this, you find out that you still aren’t covered. I mean, who even thinks about levels of sewage contamination EVER affecting them? Wishing all of you success in being fully compensated.

I just received this comment from another resident reflecting on the broader impact of this public health menace to which we have all been subject to for the past eight years…”I put 2 and 2 together…I have swum twice only this year in the Broadwater. Each time I was dodgy both ends the day after. I felt so sick the last time that I could not eat. I lost 20 Kgs. I have not gone back near the water. When will it be safe again?” This is truly serious.
