PART FOUR – EXPOSED!! Gold Coast Council’s Years of Cover-up, Neglect and Denials

Ross River Virus Outbreak – Cr. Owen-Jones (Div 2) Deletes All FB Comments – Council Refuses to Issue Public Health Warning
170 cases of mosquito borne disease reported since April [the middle of a dry winter], of which 107 were Ross River Fever. GC Council’s failure and later refusal to issue public health warnings left residents unwittingly exposed to debilitating mosquito borne disease.
The Gold Coast Bulletin on December 04 to its credit printed an article in support of Cr. Peter Young’s (Division 5) desperate attempts to raise public awareness of the plague and demand Council action. Large numbers of mosquitoes are affecting Clagiraba, Gaven, Highland Park, Nerang, Pacific Pines Runaway Bay, Oxenford, Helensvale, Hope Island, Sanctuary Cove and Santa Barbara. These suburbs are all within the same radius of the Coombabah Catchment.
Effective tidal flow throughout the catchment has been severely restricted since April as a result of mud flows observed by residents flowing into the creek from the boundary of an adjoining residential lakes estate which was in its final stages of preparation. This has resulted in large areas of exposed mud across the 19.6 Sq Km catchment presenting an ideal mosquito breeding area. Urgent requests to dredge the creek to kick-start effective tidal flows have been ignored and the cause denied by Council. This was followed up by an urgent email to GCCC CEO, the Mayor, all Councillors, local State and Federal representatives, relevant government Ministers and the Premier on two separate occasions. I received only 50% Auto-Replies and no direct response from anyone other than Cr. Peter Young and Federal Member Stuart Roberts who’s PA referred me back to GCCC.
Council’s Media/PR department instead issued disarming statements shifting the focus from Ross River Fever and other mosquito borne diseases to promote the annoying mosquito numbers and followed up with an additional spraying program. This behaviour continues to mislead the public leaving us exposed unwittingly to the risk contracting these diseases.
A cover-up of this magnitude can only be perceived as yet another act of criminal negligence.
Cr. OWEN-JONES YOU HAVE BETRAYED THE RESIDENTS OF DIVISION 2. YOU HAVE FAILED…STEP DOWN!!

Folks, I have just received the following advice from the Gold Coast City Council’s CEO’s office in regard to the Ross River Virus outbreak…In essence, GCCC is not responsible for monitoring or declaring a disease outbreak, that is the responsible of the relevant authority in this case Qld Health Dept. Should Qld Health believe that a disease meets its criteria it will make the relevant declarations/announcements. At which time GCCC will comply by providing the public with information on how to control mosquito populations, management of water, safety precautions etc. PLEASE READ COUNCIL’S RESPONSE IN THE LATEST POST OF 31 Jan, 2020.
Definitely time to drain the swamp – by that I mean the GCCC.
