PART ONE – EXPOSED!! Gold Coast Council’s years of cover-up, neglect and denials
Summary – The year in perspective.
Folks, I’m pleased to report that after spending the year constantly exposing incompetence, neglect and outright lies the effort has finally resulted in GCCC agreeing to take some form of limited action. Actions recently confirmed by Council include:
CASE #1 – DANGEROUS LEVELS OF SEWAGE CONTAMINATION [Enterococci/E.coli]. Regular, major sewage spills in the Coombabah, Coomera estuary over at least the past 10 years was hidden from the public. A cover-up on this scale can only be perceived as criminal neglect exposing residents of Helensvale, Paradise Point and Coombabah plus international tourists to serious health risks. After analysing 10 years of recreational water quality test results provided by Council urgent concerns were raised with Council CEO, Cr’s Caldwell (Division 3), Boulton (Division 4) and Owen-Jones (Division 2). My questions were either ignored, denied, ridiculed or responded to with disarming and misleading statements prepared by GCCC Media/PR Group.
RESOLUTION: December 02, Council approved an urgent $150m Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade in closed session “after exhausting all the cheap options since the last upgrade in 2011” as stated by Cr William Owen-Jones (Division 2) and in the term of the current council.
AVOIDING THE UPGRADE FOR 9 YEARS ENABLED THEM TO RIP FUNDS OUT OF THIS CRITICAL BUDGET AREA TO FUND THEIR OWN PERSONAL, FRIVOLOUS PROJECTS LEAVING THE RESIDENTS AND CHILDREN EXPOSED TO SERIOUS HEALTH RISKS.
Cr. OWEN-JONES YOU HAVE ONCE AGAIN BETRAYED THE RESIDENTS OF DIVISION 2 AND PUT AT RISK THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF ALL RESIDENTS THROUGHOUT THE CATCHMENT INCLUDING HELENSVALE, MONTEREY KEYS, COOMBABAH, HOPE ISLAND, SANCTUARY COVE AND PARADISE POINT…YOU HAVE FAILED…STEP DOWN NOW!
CASE #2 – DANGEROUS LEVELS OF SEWAGE CONTAMINATION. Analysis of the raw data also revealed that Gold Coast City Council decided in November 2017 to cease all water quality testing including Enterococci/E.coli, with the exception of 28 designated swimming areas. This I have learned was a cost cutting measure. Once again Council chose not to notify the public of this decision or provide public health warnings, leaving residents, their families and international tourists unwittingly exposed to high risks of contracting potentially fatal, faecal related diseases. Once again, a cover-up of this magnitude can only be perceived as criminal negligence.
RESOLUTION: Wed, December 18, Council advised that it will be installing a new EDMS system ‘EnviroSys’ recreational water monitoring system early in the new year [originally scheduled for later in the year and only in the major rivers]. They also stated that results will be made available to the public. However, requests to conduct at least one comprehensive test to establish the volume of prescription drugs, illicit drugs and other toxins present in recreational water and marine life has been denied claiming that these will be done “if there is a particular reason to do so”. Not sure what Council considers to be a “particular reason”, I would have thought resident concern would be compelling enough.
THEY HAVE STILL NOT CONFIRMED WHETHER COOMBABAH OR OTHER CATCHMENTS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THESE TESTS.

Don’t stop until their corrupt actions and disgusting tactics used against you and those supporting you are exposed to the greater Australian population to show what all governments do to their environment and how little respect they ALL have for their constituents!!

Great work Steve. It is sad that you had to use the year to push them to do what they are paid to do…..but did not do. You could have spent the time this year on other matters relating to the Wetlands Conservation program. Cheers and thank you. I spent some time this year doing research on the importance of mangroves and Wetlands as breeding habitats and nurseries for aquatic life. Also the importance of seaweed, especially of North NSW and S.E Qld and the meeting places of warmer tropical and colder southern waters. Blew me away. I never appreciated how important this stretch of the East Australian Coast is, next to the Great Barrier Reef region and the kelp regions, bay regions of NSW. We are in for more and bigger algae blooms in the future and over acidic coastal tides if the Council does not address the local issues now. I realised last year that most of the population do not understand our water environmental issues. There is a lot of focus on land management and interior river systems, and so happy you are passionate about the wetlands conservation. I cannot even begin to think of the impact human development has had upon the fertility health and breeding cycles of our delicate aquatic and bird life. Let alone the mud, sand and silt…and tree health.
So glad I got out of there.
It is simply unacceptable that our city council has to be forced to carry out its legal responsibilities. The GCCC and Tate are treating council like a corporation that acts only in its own interests, regardless of the effects on ratepaying citizens. And without the watchful eye of groups like Wetlands Conservation or the individual that runs it, council crimes would continue to go unnoticed, unheeded. Regardless of their late and pathetic attempts to do things right, this mayor and this council MUST GO.
